BILLEDSERIE OG AFSTEMNING Tusinder af amerikanere fejrede Bin Ladens død på Ground Zero i New York

Tusinderne af New Yorkere stimlede søndag nat amerikansk tid sammen foran Ground Zero og på Times Square for at fejre Osama Bin Ladens død.

Kort tid efter at nyheden om, at al-Qaedas stifter var blevet dræbt af amerikanske styrker i Pakistan slap ud søndag aften, begyndte de første glædesfyldte amerikanere at samle sig på gaderne foran byggeriet af det nye World Trade Center.

- Det har været en dag, alle har ventet på. Det var helt uventet, og jeg havde ikke lige regnet med at bruge min søndag aften på at fejre Osamas død. Stemningen er helt eklektisk, siger Alisyn Reid, der tilfældigt var i New York for besøge sin bror.

Området foran Ground Zero var proppet med amerikanere svøbt i amerikanske flag, og regelmæssigt brød forsamlingen euforisk ud i nationalsangen eller tilråb som "USA, USA, USA" eller "Yes we can", der kunne høres flere gader væk.

På postkasser, biler og i lygtepæle kravlede de råbende fremmødte rundt med flag, stearinlys og plakater, og i Manhattans gader kørte bilerne dyttende rundt med amerikanske bannere hængende ud af vinduerne.

- Det er helt klart en vigtig dag. Den markerer en afslutning, et sidste kapitel af sorg for de mennesker, der mistede venner og familiemedlemmer 11. september, siger Lucas Bennett, der skyndte sig til festlighederne lige efter arbejde.

Rygtet om de to folkefester på Times Square og ved Ground Zero blev hurtigt spredt gennem Facebook og Twitter.

New York Police Department vurderer, at der inden for den første time var mødt over tusinde mennesker frem i gaderne omkring Ground Zero.

På trods af den pludselige samling af mennesker fortæller politibetjente, at alt er foregået stilfærdigt, og uden at politiet har behøvet at gribe ind.
